Why it works from Bay View Beach House

This is the best short drive available from the house. Greenfield Beach, where the walk starts, is roughly six kilometres away — about ten minutes in the car, indicative and traffic dependent. That is close enough to do before lunch and be back at the house for the afternoon, which matters when part of the group would rather stay put.

It also splits neatly. Walkers can do the full loop while non-walkers stay at Greenfield Beach, and everyone reconvenes at the same car park. With a group of eleven, an activity that does not require unanimous enthusiasm is worth a great deal.

The official facts

NSW National Parks lists the White Sands Walk and Scribbly Gum track as a 2.5 kilometre loop, with a suggested time of 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. The track starts at Greenfield Beach. Those are the official figures — the wide time range reflects how much people stop, not track difficulty grading, and the park's own page is the only thing worth trusting for current conditions.

Everything about driving distance on this page is indicative. Greenfield Beach is around 6 km and roughly ten minutes from the house; Hyams Beach is around 9 to 10 km and roughly fifteen minutes. Those are approximations, route and traffic dependent, and they can change substantially in peak holiday periods.

How to plan the morning

Leave early. Parking at Greenfield Beach and around Hyams Beach is limited and becomes the deciding factor in peak season — in busy periods access arrangements have been managed actively, so check the official park page before you drive rather than after you arrive.

A workable shape for a family group: breakfast at the house, drive to Greenfield Beach, walk the loop at whatever pace the slowest walker sets, swim or sit at the beach afterwards, then drive back for a late lunch. If you would rather make a full day of it, bring food — do not assume anything will be open nearby.

What the walk is like

The route links a series of small beaches and headlands with bush track sections, which is why the suggested time range is so wide. Walked briskly it is a half-hour; walked properly, with stops at each beach, it fills an easy two hours. It is a loop, so you are never committed to a long return leg.

Take water, sun protection and footwear that copes with both sand and track. Phone reception in this area should not be relied on for navigation — the official track page is worth screenshotting before you leave the house.

Hyams Beach afterwards

Hyams Beach is roughly nine to ten kilometres from the house, around fifteen minutes, indicative. It is a small residential village rather than a resort, and it has limited parking and limited services. If you are going, go early or go late, and be prepared to change plans if the village is full.
